24 Hours in Wisconsin | Where to Play, Dine & Stay!

Destinations, U.S.A.

Is going to a Green Bay Packers game on your bucket list? It wasn’t on mine, but it was on my husband’s. And since I’m on a quest to see all 50 states in one year, a quick jaunt to Wisconsin during football season was a must!

I’m not joking when I say “quick” – we literally were there for less than 24 hours. Getting there was a breeze. For some reason Wisconsin seemed so far away, but the flight time was just over two hours. And the airport was basically empty… I guess Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport is not a hot spot on a Sunday morning.

PLAY: Green Bay Packers game at Lambeau Field

We headed straight from the airport to Lambeau Field, about a 2.5 hour drive. Plenty of parking options are available within a short walk of Lambeau. I believe we paid $20 to park in the parking lot of a bank, where the funds collected on game days are donated to a local charity. Win-win.

First on the agenda – tailgate! It was clear the season ticket holders had their routine down, coming to games equipped with pop-up tents, grills and plenty of provisions.

Since it was torrentially downpouring, we opted to join the party in the Tundra Tailgate Zone, an indoor tailgate that opens four hours prior to kick-off and closes one hour after the game ends. Inside, fans can eat, drink, jam to live music and of course, mingle with fellow Packers fans.

Thankfully the rain slowed a bit around game time. It was still very wet and cold, but I guess it wouldn’t be a proper Lambeau experience if it were 75 and sunny! The game was exciting, the atmosphere in the stadium was electric and the fans sitting around us could not have been nicer. Wisconsin Dec 2015

Three musts if a Packers game is on your agenda:

1.) Rent a portable seat cushion for $6, even if you plan on standing for much of the game. The bleachers are metal – i.e. cold & uncomfortable on the bum.

2.) Dress warmly. Don’t worry for one bit about your game day outfit. This isn’t a football game in a major metropolitan area, this is Wisconsin. People were wearing hunting gear – literally. Camo, bright orange, you name it. {I wore my ski jacket and worried that I’d look silly… boy was I wrong!}

3.) Eat a bratwurst with ALL the condiments. I’m not a big meat-eater but boy was it delicious. And it’s warm and comforting, the perfect fuel for sitting in the cold for hours.

DINE: Locavore, located within the Potawatomi Hotel & Casino

With a menu boasting sustainable, organic and fresh Midwestern ingredients, Locavore was just what we needed after a long day of travel and football excitement. Of course we enjoyed a plate of Wisconsin meats and cheeses – because it wouldn’t be a successful trip to WI without indulging in local cheese!

Charles had Scallop Saltimboca while I opted for Local Mushroom Napolean, an intriguing and delicious dish made with oyster, wood ear and king trumpet mushrooms, asparagus, rhubarb, mushroom broth and local honey. Both dishes were tremendous!

STAY: Potawatomi Hotel & Casino, Milwaukee

Potawatomi Hotel & Casino was the perfect spot for us for one night. Conveniently located in Milwaukee, the hotel’s rooms are bright, clean and perfectly functional. {It opened in the summer of 2014, so everything still feels very “new.”} A warm room, comfortable bed and delicious meal were really all we needed!

Staff were wonderful and I liked the hotel’s modern design. It’s the first casino hotel in Wisconsin to attain LEED® Gold certification as well, which I appreciated. Truth be told, I didn’t even step foot inside the casino, but I’m sure it offers plenty of attractions for every type of gambler!

If you’re a football fan, experiencing a Packers game at Lambeau Field is something you’ll never forget. I’m not even much of a football fan, and even I had a ball! Don’t wait – book a quick jaunt to Wisconsin soon!
